The 25 Species of Coworkers

coworker 300x240 The 25 Species of CoworkersThey might be lurking in the cubicle next to you or lounging in a cushy corner office. They could be e-nagging you daily or haunting your dreams at night. That’s right, the people you work with have the power to influence, annoy, inspire, and scare the living daylights out of you (work nightmares, anyone?).

Since you’re stuck with them 40 hours a week (at least!) you might as well understand them. Alice Handley and Kayla Baxter, from adminsecret.com, have come up with a field guide to the most common species of coworkers, no matter where you work. These types transcend every type of workplace — we guarantee you’ll find a few you recognize.

The Gossip
What they do:
Maybe there was some mistake in the hiring process, because The Gossip seems to be under the impression that their entire job description is “talking about other people.” Unfortunately for you, The Gossip lives for the latest office scandal, whether it’s actually true or not. The Gossip spends their days listening in on conversations, dropping hints, and tarnishing reputations. The most dangerous part about the Gossip is that they are everywhere. No conversation is safe when The Gossip is within earshot (they may pretend they’re listening to music on their headphones, but we know better.)

How to deal:
The Gossip can be difficult to deal with because more often than not they are outwardly very sweet and kind — to gain your trust and learn your secrets. Then, all bets are off if your secret somehow gets them higher in the pecking order. The best way to deal with The Gossip, in our opinion, is just to ignore them. And whatever you do, don’t give them details about your own life or repeat what they have said. Before you repeat a so-called juicy tidbit, ask yourself: Is it true? Is it harmless? Is it necessary? If it isn’t, don’t repeat it. Don’t encourage them!

Money Mondays: Get your Budget in Shape

womanwithmoney Money Mondays: Get your Budget in ShapeWhatever money management method you use, there’s a tendency to imagine that a household budget will run itself-and yet it’s so very easy for money and reality to get out of synch.

Telltale signs include forgetting to monitor basic expenses by using and not paying attention to where household cash is going; sweeping unusual expenses under the rug; and not saving up enough for future expenses.

There’s only one way to get a budget up and running again: Face the numbers:
• Write down or use software like Microsoft Money to track all your expenses.

• Pull out your bills and your checkbook (or online statement) and double-check payments and balances.

• Breathe deeply. Take breaks. Don’t whine.

Queen Latifah Essence July Cover Girl

queenlatifah 228x300 Queen Latifah Essence July Cover Girl
Queen Latifah looks fab as she graces the July cover of Essence Magazine sporting a new short summer cut and cream off the shoulder bohemian dress. In her cover story she reveals a traumatic occurrence she has never talked about before until now…that she was abused as a child by a baby-sister.

“He violated me. I never told anybody. I just buried it as deeply as I could and kept people at an arms length. I never really let a person get too close to me.”

On her personal life, she continues to keep it private…

“My personal life is personal and it’s really not for everyone else,” she told the mag. “With what I do for a living, I have to share a lot of myself with a lot of people, but I’m not going to share everything.”

On the continuous speculation on her sexual orientation…

“They want to make up stories and make me gay all the time and it’s like, ‘Keep running with it,’” she said. “I’ve definitely been annoyed by it, but I learned a long time ago that it was pointless to say anything. Everybody else can do the reading; I’ll do the living.”

The July issue of Essence magazine is on newsstands now.

Simplify and de-clutter
Use direct deposit. This should be a no-brainer, but many people who are eligible for direct deposit of their paychecks don’t ever sign up. Perhaps it’s an irrational fear of electronic transactions holding them back, but they should get over it. Direct deposit is easier, faster and safer than running around with a live check in your wallet. Read the rest of this entry »

For the Fellas: Are you Like Me?

littleprez For the Fellas: Are you Like Me?

The innocence and curiosity of a child are priceless.

This little man was granted a visit to the White House recently, where he asked the President a simple question…”Can I feel your hair to see if it’s like mine? You see, the four-year-old had just gotten a hair cut and asked his barber to cut his hair like Barack Obama. So, when the youngster had his meet-and-greet in the Oval Office he was ready to ask his BIG question. The President, obliged.

Having a President that reflects an image of so many young curious boys makes me wonder about their dreams and aspirations. Not saying that the highest office in the country was never attainable, but the ambition and determination just got intensely stronger. No matter what our children want to be come…a scuba diver (like my son) or the President of the United States, embrace their little thoughts and passions which will become their BIG purpose. Dream on children!

Forbes’ 100 Powerful Celebrities List 2009

beyonceforbes 233x300 Forbes 100 Powerful Celebrities List 2009Looks like a few of our favorite Working Divas have made this year’s list. Beyonce’ may not have gotten the number one slot, but she did get the cover complete with feature story on how she earned her 87 million as singer-producer-turned-actress! Beyonce made the top five ranking in at number four.

Ms. Oprah was number one last year but was unseated by actress Angelina Jolie. But when it comes to the paper…Oprah is still tops, earning 287 million in 2008 over Angelina’s 27 million.

Other Working Diva celebs that made the list were Madonna and Venus and Serena Williams.

Here is an excerpt of the Beyonce cover story….
This year she will bring in an estimated $87 million from publishing and music sales, touring and other performances, film work, her fashion collection and endorsement deals. That diversified portfolio helps her land at number 4 on the FORBES Celebrity 100 list, a ranking based on income and visibility. Beyoncé constantly works and reworks her act, watching every two-hour performance on tour–even after her hundredth appearance–taking notes on how to improve. “I’m never satisfied,” she says, adding with a nervous laugh, “I’m sure sometimes it’s not easy working for me.” Then, seriously: “I’ve never met anyone that works harder than me in my industry.” (entire story)
