Ovarian Cancer – Genetic Screening and Surgical Prevention

| September 17, 2009

Women who have a family history of ovarian cancer or a BRCA 1 or 2 gene mutation are candidates for prophylactic removal of the ovaries and Fallopian tubes.

This removal does prevent ovarian cancer, but, there is the small risk of developing primary peritoneal cancer which acts like an ovarian cancer and is similarly treated.

Elizabeth Poynor, MD, PhD describes the surgical treatment and chemotherapy and the importance of followup with transvaginal screening ultrasound.

There is no blood test for ovarian cancer which is as sensitive as the PSA for prostate cancer in men, the Ca 125 is useful in following women who have been treated for an ovarian cancer.
