Remember the 70's TV show The Bionic Woman? I use to love that show. Watching a smart, savvy and strong woman take on the bad guys and win was awesome. I had all the toys; the doll, her blow up house (that took all Christmas Morning to inflate), her bionic station, the outfits....EVERYTHING. I wanted to be the bionic woman. Yet, I was only a little girl that hadn't experienced tough life occurrences. I only saw the end product. The bionic woman kicking butt and taking names. But who was Jamie Summers before her bionic prowess? How did she get ...

Happy New Year! I have some exciting news to tell you. I am moving to Cleveland for a new radio job in February. Thank you to everyone in South Florida for supporting my radio career in Miami, my wonderful listeners in Charleston, SC and Florence, SC., and of course everyone on the Working Divas Network. I have been absent for a minute trying to get my professional and personal life in order for this cross country move. Once I am settled, (sometime in February) I will be more active on the blog and network. I can’t wait to reconnect with you all!

Before I continue to pack up my life…I want to thank you for the love you have given me over the years. Working in radio is a special job that I don’t take lightly. I am humbled by your support and want to make you proud.
2010 is OUR season…let’s continue to shine TOGETHER.
This is a BIG DEAL! Princess Tiana made her royal debut last Monday at Disney’s Magic Kingdom. This is huge for me because as a woman of color it is so amazing to see Disney’ first African-American princess make her entrance into the world.
Yes, I’ve admired Snow White and Cinderella growing up, but now little girls of color have a princess in their own image and I think it is a beautiful thing. So beautiful that when my husband pointed her out to me across the walkway I hurried (in awe) to stand in line to take a picture with her like I was a little princess.
For the last two years, every time I visit Disney I’ve looked for Princess Tiana’s existence. From the princess shops to the gift shop at my hotel, I’ve watched her come about slowly, anticipating the items I would pick up for…well…myself. As women, we all have a little princess that lives within us and now I have a few Princess Tiana collectibles to remind me.
Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog” hits theaters nationwide December 11th. Will you be there? I know I will!
Deep within your soul you have a purpose that is eager to escape and wreak havoc through every bone in your body. It’s time for you to expand your innate talents. Starting now…develop and nurture your purpose. Now, don’t sit here and think you don’t have something to give the world. Everyone, including you has a purpose…a talent…a calling.
Let’s do a quick painless exercise. Get a pen and paper, laptop or your journal and write at the top of the page or screen, “(your name)’s Purpose.” Begin to write down the things you love to do so much you would do them for free or something you do so great everyone raves about it all the time. Perhaps it’s writing poetry…we all know where that got Jill Scott. Are you great with kids, love numbers, cook or bake well, a great organizer and planner…we all know where that got President Barack Obama. Are you computer savvy, a good listener, a people’s person…we all know where that got Oprah. Whatever comes to your mind, let the thoughts flow from your mind through your fingers and onto the paper or screen. This list of randomly thought items will become your purpose. And you said you couldn’t think of anything…gotcha!
Now it’s time to plan your work and work your plan. Each day do something that enhances your purpose. Don’t let others tell you its too hard. Keep the negativity at bay. Get rid of all the limiting feelings and believe you are limitless. Cultivate and align your purpose and let it shine. Pray on it and live it every day. Your purpose gives you meaning…explore it.

I was driving home one evening with my radio cranked, when a song I’ve played on my radio show for years consumed me. It struck a nerve like Chicken Little dodging elimination on American Idol.
As I was singing along to Jaheim’s “Put that Woman First,” (hey what women doesn’t want to sing at the top of her lungs…you better put that women first!) I had to ponder on the thought, when was the last time I did something for myself? Hummm… for a few hours on my birthday, about 10 minutes last night during my shower, right now during my ride home. Through my quick analysis, I discovered I had not put myself first in a long time. Read the rest of this entry »
Do you remember being that young sister who yearned for control and independence? In 1986 when Janet Jackson came out with the song “Control” it was our theme song. I’m all grown up, ready and ABLE to take on the world. Responsibility, relationships, school, work, family…I GOT IT. At that age it appeared so easy to be our “own woman.”
Once we have taken the “reigns of control,” we think we have won! We say to our parents (in our minds of course) HA! So why is it when we step out into the real world and begin to live life, we let others take the Control we so desperately wanted to claim? Whether it is your significant other, a manager on the job, a co-worker, or a so-called friend, these control grabbers are all around us. It’s time to put them in check! Read the rest of this entry »
Here is the beautiful Key West Sunset I promised you during my Mother’s Day Weekend Retreat to Key West. The sunset in the Keys is AMAZING to say the least. If you want to take a weekend getaway with the girls or with your boo, try Key West. My family and I had a ball and we look forward to going back really soon. This time with a grandparent so I can hang out past 8pm. *smile*
Today my family and I hit the road on a mini Mother’s Day retreat to the Keys. This week has been hectic and I need the break. From doing my radio show in Charleston, South Carolina, to purging my garage; I’ve been on a mission.
Have you ever had a week that started off a mess and by the end of it everything fell into place? This has been the story of my week. If there is anything I have learned over the pass few days… it’s to stay on course and build momentum. I’ve gone from…overwhelmed to empowered. When you feel yourself becoming overwhelmed make your anxiety work for you. Sort through the issues slowly and work your plan. It is not how overwhelmed you are, it is how you handle your emotion. Here are a few pointers for you.
1. CONFIDENCE: Have the confidence in yourself that you can make anything happen. You have the mindset and the skill set to create a plan for all your challenges.
2. STRENGTH: Have faith! Any circumstance you are given you can handle. Do not let your stresses annoy or upset you. Handle them with control and grace.
3. PATIENCE: Know what you would like your outcome to be and have the patience to manifest your goal.
4. LOVE: Love yourself enough to believe that your can achieve ANYTHING.
Now, show’em what you‘re working with Ms. Working Diva! You are a go-getter. Cross the bridge of overwhelmed to EMPOWERED. And of course, take in some ME TIME afterwards. My “Me Time” will be in the form of a Key West sunset. I’ll be sure to send a picture.
Last night I was up late or many would say up early. I happen to be chatting with one of Miami’s finest, Jill Tracey. We have worked together on different occasions but never sat down and talked about life, our desires, our dreams, our fears, and how to make it in broadcasting during times of despair. It took the power of Facebook and the fact that we were both up late early creating our master plans to reunite. We encouraged each other, brainstormed, and gave each other a virtual hi-five. It’s funny how they say women do not get along or women cannot work together. It’s a myth. Women move the world and we can come together to empower each other and bond.
Jill and I have both been taking on a roller coaster of radio madness. Two sisters who lit up the airwaves in Miami with number one ratings are no longer behind the mic but we have the passion to keep stepping and make our mess our message. Via the Internet we have both connected with listeners and fans giving us the reality that people are still interested, engaged and want to be entertained by us….we hear you! Look for us on Facebook, Twitter and here on the Working Divas blog to keep the light going as we all continue to SHINE.
