The year was 1982...and I was with a few friends over a DJ's house when he was previewing new music. He pulled out the Debarge record, "I Like It" and we were all in El's trance. We wondered like everyone else...is that Switch? Nope...after looking on the back-cover of the album. It was Bobby and Tommy DeBarge's younger siblings. We listened over and over again until we all knew the words and could sing along. Not noticing the time...it was two hours later and past my curfew. Needless to say, the week on punishment was well worth it. I sang, "I Like It," ...
Feel Good: Are You a Bionic Woman?
Remember the 70's TV show The Bionic Woman? I use to love that show. Watching a smart, savvy and strong woman take on the bad guys and win was awesome. I had all the toys; the doll, her blow up house (that took all Christmas Morning to inflate), her bionic station, the outfits....EVERYTHING. I wanted to be the bionic woman. Yet, I was only a little girl that hadn't experienced tough life occurrences. I only saw the end product. The bionic woman kicking butt and taking names. But who was Jamie Summers before her bionic prowess? How did she get ...

Water Play Safety Tips
Summertime and water play go hand and hand during the Summer months. Have a fun and safe summer with your children with these Water Play Safety Tips.
1. Keep Your Eyes Locked in at ALL TIMES. Stay focused on your precious little ones and save the good book for your personal beach or pool time. Don't depend on anyone else to watch your children in the water no matter who the are. If you or one of your children need to take a bathroom break. Signal for everyone to get out of the pool.
2. Bright Colored Swimsuit- dress all your children ...
No matter if you are a size 2 or 32 or somewhere above, beneath or in between, I’m calling on your inner queen. Last night I sat for the first time in my life and enjoyed the blessing of the condo I rent. I drew a nice warm bath & lit my few remaining candles and enjoyed the blessing of bathing and soaking in a bathroom inside my bedroom in the quiet of the night. I thought about the fact that some woman, somewhere in the world does not have this opportunity right now, for that I said thank you Lord for this opportunity.
I then slipped into a nice clean Asian inspired robe that was a gift bought for me and sat on a couch my landlord allowed me to keep, while listening to love songs playing from an old desktop my former employer gave to me. I said to myself everything may not be how I want it to be, but thank you God for choosing me.
Shortly after I walked to the kitchen and poured wine that was a b-day gift into a glass that was a moving away gift to me. I sat down at my 2 seat pub table that was also a housewarming gift to me with $.49 wood place mats that my dear friend thought would be nice for me. I sipped the wine & sat on the stool and admired the small cozy place and said thank you God for people who care about me. Read the rest of this entry »
Every morning we put on our superwoman cape and take on what ever the world throws at us…literately. But when our super powers begin to dwindle, we become overwhelmed and stressed out. Even Wonder Woman has some tough days. Now, we may not have an invisible jet and golden bracelets but we can work it out. Here are my five tips for beating stress and working towards balance.
If you could have a conversation with your younger self…what would you say? I would tell my younger Working Diva; don’t overwhelm yourself working three jobs while being a full time student. Enjoy life and college, there is plenty of time to work. Balance your lifestyle. Just slow down and take in the richness life has to offer. Patrica Volonakis Davis collected her inner thoughts and now shares them with young women…and now you. Pass this along to other women and young women you may know.
1. You are at least ten times prettier than you think you are. That holds true no matter how pretty you already think you are! Don’t believe me? Ask your mother/auntie/grannie if she thought she was pretty when she was twenty. She’ll say no. Then find a photo of her at that age. See what I mean?
2. The only thing you should be faking is confidence.
If you don’t have it yet, pretend you do. In every new situation, pretend you’re not nervous, pretend you’re not afraid. After a few times doing this, the pretend part disappears.
Deep within your soul you have a purpose that is eager to escape and wreak havoc through every bone in your body. It’s time for you to expand your innate talents. Starting now…develop and nurture your purpose. Now, don’t sit here and think you don’t have something to give the world. Everyone, including you has a purpose…a talent…a calling. Today my family and I hit the road on a mini Mother’s Day retreat to the Keys. This week has been hectic and I need the break. From doing my radio show in Charleston, South Carolina, to purging my garage; I’ve been on a mission.
Have you ever had a week that started off a mess and by the end of it everything fell into place? This has been the story of my week. If there is anything I have learned over the pass few days… it’s to stay on course and build momentum. I’ve gone from…overwhelmed to empowered. When you feel yourself becoming overwhelmed make your anxiety work for you. Sort through the issues slowly and work your plan. It is not how overwhelmed you are, it is how you handle your emotion. Here are a few pointers for you.
1. CONFIDENCE: Have the confidence in yourself that you can make anything happen. You have the mindset and the skill set to create a plan for all your challenges.
2. STRENGTH: Have faith! Any circumstance you are given you can handle. Do not let your stresses annoy or upset you. Handle them with control and grace.
3. PATIENCE: Know what you would like your outcome to be and have the patience to manifest your goal.
4. LOVE: Love yourself enough to believe that your can achieve ANYTHING.
Now, show’em what you‘re working with Ms. Working Diva! You are a go-getter. Cross the bridge of overwhelmed to EMPOWERED. And of course, take in some ME TIME afterwards. My “Me Time” will be in the form of a Key West sunset. I’ll be sure to send a picture.
Last night I was up late or many would say up early. I happen to be chatting with one of Miami’s finest, Jill Tracey. We have worked together on different occasions but never sat down and talked about life, our desires, our dreams, our fears, and how to make it in broadcasting during times of despair. It took the power of Facebook and the fact that we were both up late early creating our master plans to reunite. We encouraged each other, brainstormed, and gave each other a virtual hi-five. It’s funny how they say women do not get along or women cannot work together. It’s a myth. Women move the world and we can come together to empower each other and bond.
Jill and I have both been taking on a roller coaster of radio madness. Two sisters who lit up the airwaves in Miami with number one ratings are no longer behind the mic but we have the passion to keep stepping and make our mess our message. Via the Internet we have both connected with listeners and fans giving us the reality that people are still interested, engaged and want to be entertained by us….we hear you! Look for us on Facebook, Twitter and here on the Working Divas blog to keep the light going as we all continue to SHINE.
Step one: Making our Dreams our Reality. Click on the video below and let Goapele help you rediscover and cultivate your dreams for your self, family, and community. Know that you are a strong woman with the ability to move mountains. Let’s move them together.
